Spain’s captain David Ferrer has given the reason behind pairing Carlos Alcaraz with Marcel Granollers following their resounding 3-0 victory at the Davis Cup. It was Alcaraz’s first partnership in a professional match on the ATP Tour after playing alongside Rafael Nadal at the Paris Olympics.

Alcaraz arrived in Valencia for Spain’s Davis Cup matches following early exits in Cincinnati and the US Open. Roberto Bautista Agut took to the court to open the Group phase match between Spain and the Czech Republic.

Agut played excellently to win the first singles match, beating Jiri Lehecka 7-6(1), 6-4. Alcaraz then took on Tomas Machac in the second singles match. The Spaniard lost the first set but found a way to bounce back in the second set before Machac retired with the score reading 6-7(3), 6-1, 0-0, giving Spain a comfortable 2-0 lead.]

Alcaraz and Granollers then combined to beat Jakub Mensik and Adam Pavlasek 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(2). After the victory, Ferrer said that he had consulted with Alcaraz”s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero before partnering him with Granollers. He added Spain needed the resounding win as it gave them a good chance of reaching the Davis Cup Final Phase.

In the end, all the points add up, it was very important to win the match 3-0 against the Czech Republic because all the teams here have great players and in the end I know it will be very close. From my point of view, it was a duo that I knew could do well, although I also consulted their coach, Juan Carlos. I didn't need to talk to Carlos because as soon as I saw him in the dressing room, he told me he wanted to play.

Alcaraz has often been compared to Rafael Nadal’s style of play and performance levels. However, Nadal is highly regarded in Spain having won four Davis Cup titles for his country. Alcaraz will hope to replicate the tennis legend’s achievement.

Carlos Alcaraz tried to find positives at Davis Cup following early exit at US Open

Carlos Alcaraz has admitted that it has been hard to find positives on the court after his early exit from the US Open. The Spaniard played at his best during the summer, winning the French Open and Wimbledon, and then claimed the silver medal at the Paris Olympics.

However, the Spaniard has failed to take that form into the North American hard court swing. Following a poor performance at the Cincinnati Open, he won just one match before exiting the US Open. He is now hoping that the Davis Cup can give him much-needed confidence.

I’m first of all really happy with playing a good match in singles and a pretty good match in doubles. I’m a little bit tired, I’m not going to lie. I tried to take the positive things about my losses in the United States, it has been really tough to find, but I found it.

After the Davis Cup Group phase, Alcaraz will compete at the China Open, which kicks off on September 26. The Spaniard lost to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals last year.
