Sports Minister of India, Kiren Rijiju stated that Indian chess player Srinath Narayanan will be refunded after he was asked to pay custom duty on a gold medal that he won at the FIDE Online Chess Olympiad. It was reported by Hindustan Times that Narayanan was asked to pay a sum of Rs. 6,300 in order to receive the gold medal.

On Wednesday, the chess star had taken to Twitter to share that he had received his medal after more than a week. He also revealed that he had to pay customs duty. This led to uproar among the sports community and now, the Sports Minister has rightfully intervened.

‘Very upset with the news’ – Kiren Rijiju

Following the news of Narayanan being asked to pay customs duty going viral, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter to ensure that the issue had been resolved with payment of a refund to the chess star. The Minister further stated that he was ‘very upset with the news.’

The Tweet read as follows, “I’m very upset with this news. My office has already reached out to the athlete. It was a case of misunderstanding between Customs and Courier company. The issue has been resolved. The company has acknowledged the slip up & will return the money to the athlete Srinath Narayanan.”
