“STAN THE MAN!” Twitter goes frenzy as Stan Wawrinka Stuns Casper Ruud on home soil in Basel
Stan Wawrinka
Despite being overshadowed by the Big Three throughout his professional career, tennis professional player Stan Wawrinka has successfully made his mark in the tennis community, with his impeccable performances. Even with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic taking most of the limelight in every tournament, Wawrinka was able to snatch some of the glory for himself.
He was also instrumental in helping the Switzerland team win the Davis Cup 2014 title under the captaincy of Roger Federer.
In addition to his serve and backhand being his greatest strokes, Wawrinka believes clay to be his best and favorite surface. Wawrinka possesses one of the strongest backhands ever, according to John McEnroe, who also referred to him as having “the best one-handed backhand in the game” in 2009.
The Swiss has been around for a very long time on the ATP Tour. But with a recent win over the current World No.3 Casper Ruud to advance in the second round of the Swiss Indoors Tournament at Basel, he has turned back the clock.
The 37-year-old is making a comeback to the tennis circuit this year. He produced his best performance this year at the Moselle Open where he made it to the semi-finals of the tournament. He stunned the world by defeating the gritty Russian Daniil Medvedev in the second round in three sets.
With his win against the Norwegian, the three times Grand Slam champion has set a second-round fixture against Brandon Nakashima of the USA.
Stan Wawrinka is back with a bang!
Stan Wawrinka participated in the 2021 Australian Open but had to exit the tournament after losing in the second round. He then participated in the Rotterdam Open and Qatar Open, but could impress no one. Soon, he had to quit the rest of the tour in 2021 due to a left foot injury.
He made his comeback in the Monte-Carlo Masters missing the Australian Open this season. In the Grand Slams, his miserable run continues as the Beijing Olympics 2008 gold medalist crashed out of the Roland Garros, the Wimbledon, and the US Open in the first round of each tournament.
Meanwhile, a Twitter user noticed that both Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka won their matches in the Vienna Open and Swiss Indoors respectively this week.
Here are some replies:
Twitter has gone crazy with his latest win. Many were astonished at the way he played against the US Open finalist.
Some even lauded the hard work and the never dying spirit of the Swiss who still has some gas left in him.
For many, he is still an inspiration and one of the last vestiges of the “Golden Era of Tennis”.
