Daniil Medvedev became the 2nd Russian to win the Nitto ATP Finals title in London, after he defeated Dominic Thiem in a three set match at the O2 Arena on Sunday. The Nitto ATP Finals was held for the first time in London in 2009, and it witnessed a surprising winner, Nikolay Davydenko who defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in the finals. 11 years, later Medvedev emulated his Russian compatriot, and won the title its last year at the O2 Arena.

Daniil Medvedev spoke about how incredible it was to start and end the Nitto ATP Finals with a Russian winner. In his victory speech, Medvedev said, ” Starting and finishing London with Russian Champions is super cool, I actually didn’t know, but Nikolay Davydenko commented on my match on Russian TV. He was a commentator during this match, and then I managed to talk to him just after the match.”

Daniil Medvedev defeated Dominic Thiem in the finals

Daniil Medvedev went undefeated in the entire week in London, defeating all of the top 3 ranked players. The Russian came back from a set down, to defeat Rafael Nadal in the semifinals and Dominic Thiem in the finals. Medvedev spoke about his idol, Nikolay Davydenko in his victory speech, and mentioned about how he grew up watching him. Davydenko was the commentator for Russian TV, and covered the final match between Thiem and Medvedev.

Medvedev said, ”I was so surprised and so happy because he was one of my idols when I was growing up when I was actually already starting to play tennis not so bad, he was there and he was playing unbelievable.” Daniil Medvedev has gone 10 matches unbeaten, in his past 2 tournaments, winning the Paris Masters and the Nitto ATP Finals title. He will use his time off to work on his game, rest and recover for the 2021 season.
