Looks like the Pittsburgh Steelers’ plan for the quarterback room worked out quite well as Justin Fields led two back-to-back victories while the star veteran Russell Wilson was benched. The team’s initial plan was for the latter to be a starter however because of his injury, the former got the opportunity to shine.
After seeing Fields’ performance this season, the Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger, who led the team to two Super Bowl victories out of six, offered a piece of advice to his former team. He wants them to stick with Fields even after the veteran quarterback recovers from his calf injury.
I like what I’ve seen, I like that he’s getting into it, I like that he’s getting the feel of it. If you told me they were 1-1 or 0-2 and these are going on, I’d think they’d have to do something, but again, he’s not turning the ball over, they’re 2-0… To me, if Russ is healthy, I’m sticking with Justin. I said it last week I wouldn’t, but what I saw [in Week Two]. I think that he has earned and deserves the right to stay there.Ben Roethlisberger said on his podcast, Channel Seven
Highlighting that the Steelers will have a big challenge in week 3 facing the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team shouldn’t take a risk even if Wilson is healthy and the initial plan was for him to start. He argued that even though Fields hasn’t gave an exceptional performance, he is exactly who the team needs at the moment and above all, exceed all the expectations from a backup.
Ben Roethlisberger compares Justin Fields to his own rookie season
The words of appreciation for Fields wasn’t the only argument the two-time Super Bowl champion presented while advocating for him continue as starter. He used the precedent from his own debut season with the team, when he had to recover for starting Tommy Maddox after he got injured just two games into the season.
Once you get into a rhythm and you get good things going, you don’t want to mess that up. I didn’t always put up big numbers, but I prided myself on getting wins, and that’s what you’re supposed to do as a quarterback: You’re supposed to win football games.Ben Roethlisberger said comparing himself to Justin Fields
He claimed that he isn’t focusing on the individual stats of the quarterback, instead he is impressed by no turnovers and the efficiency of the young player, who has the potential to bring back the glory days of the Steelers.
