Time violations and outbursts at chair umpires have been a recurring theme at the Shanghai Rolex Masters this year. On Wednesday (October 9), another incident occurred when Stefanos Tsitsipas directed his anger at the chair umpire for a time violation during his match against Daniil Medvedev.
The Shanghai Masters has seen several controversies this year. Players such as Frances Tiafoe, Novak Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev have had heated exchanges with chair umpires. After his loss to Medvedev, Tsitsipas accused the umpire of disrupting a high-quality match.
The issue arose when the chair umpire penalized Tsitsipas for taking too long to serve. This decision angered the 2019 World Tour Finals champion, leading to a confrontation with the umpire.
Even after Tsitsipas’ loss, the drama continued. Djokovic also had a tense argument with officials during his match against Roman Safiullin regarding the serve-clock rule. According to the rules, a player has 25 seconds to deliver their serve.
Daniil Medvedev set to play Jannik Sinner again in Shanghai
For the second year in a row at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, Jannik Sinner and Ben Shelton faced off in the fourth round. This time, the World No.1 turned the tables on Wednesday, stopping the American from achieving his biggest career win by PIF ATP ranking on his 22nd birthday.
Sinner won the match 6-4, 7-6(1), in a thrilling contest filled with exciting shots. This victory improved his record to 4-1 against Shelton in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series. The World No.1 hadn’t lost to the left-hander since their first encounter last year when Shelton won in a close third-set tie-break in Shanghai.
Next, Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev for the fifth time this year, aiming for a spot in the Shanghai semifinals. The Russian earned his 10th win over Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday (October 9) with a solid performance, winning 7-6(3), 6-3 in one hour and 50 minutes. Despite missing six break points in the first set, Medvedev dominated the tie-break to secure it, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Tsitsipas took an early 2-0 lead in the second set, but Medvedev quickly turned things around by winning six of the next seven games. This win sent the former World No.1 into his fourth ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal of the year. Medvedev, who sits fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, strengthened his chances of making his sixth straight appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals, which he won in 2020.
