Since the start of the season, there has been a growing argument on whether the era of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner is better than the Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic era in the men’s circuit. Tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas made his opinion clear about the ongoing debate.

Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal, popularly known as the Big 3, dominated men’s tennis for over a decade. They were dubbed the golden generation of tennis, as they worked hard to remain competitive against each other. They won 66 Grand Slams combined over 90 Masters 1000 titles put together.

However, following the retirement of Federer in 2022 and Nadal in November 2024, Alcaraz and Sinner have ignited that same kind of rivalry that the Big 3 shared on the court. The two stars have dominated the ATP since 2024 and have shared all the last seven Grand Slams, with Sinner winning four and Alcaraz three.

The duo has also faced each other in the past two Grand Slam finals. Alcaraz won their first major final meeting at the French Open, coming from two sets down to win the match in five sets. Sinner earned his revenge last July as he came from a set down to beat the World No.2 in four sets.

Tsitsipas, who competed with Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic on the court and also played against Sinner and Alcaraz, is in the best position to judge which era of tennis was the better. He revealed during an interview with Tennis365 that the current stars dominating the court aren’t better than the Big 3 but have taken the standard of the game higher than the golden generation:

I don’t think we can say Sinner and Alcaraz are better than Federer, Nadal and Djokovic until they win as many tournaments and that will take a long time. What we can say is that the level from Jannik and Carlos is very high. It’s going to keep happening that we have new champions, new stars. It’s going to keep happening. It’s part of the circle of the game and how things work.

Djokovic is the only player among the Big 3 who is still competing on the court. But, he has struggled to overcome Sinner since last year. In fact, he lost to the three-time Grand Slam champion for the fifth consecutive time in the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships, just over a month after falling to the World No.1 at the French Open.

Stefanos Tsitsipas predicts that a generation better than Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will emerge

After Roger Federer retired from professional tennis at the 2022 Laver Cup, there was a huge debate on which player would replace the Big 3 on the court. It was during the 2024 season that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner announced themselves as the top competitors in the men’s circuit, above the rest of the players in the men’s.

During the aforementioned interview, Stefanos Tsitsipas added that in the next five years, another generation of players will emerge in the ATP and will be better than Alcaraz and Sinner on tour:

I’m telling you, in the next five years, we’ll see more superstars enter the game and more players that have a different identity from those that are playing now. What we can also say is Roger, Rafa and Novak raised the standards and the number of titles they won will be hard to beat.

Sinner and Alcaraz are not competing at the ongoing Canadian Open in Toronto. However, they are expected to play the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. Alcaraz leads the Sinner in most titles this season, having won five, and the Italian star just two.
