Former NBA star Dwyane Wade and actress Gabrielle Union have a transgender daughter. Recently, she chipped in to give her opinion on the Imane Khelif vs. Angela Carini controversy at the Paris Olympics. The match gained much traction after what seemed like Khelif’s lopsided victory over Carini.

The Wade family has been an ally for the LGBTQ community for years, especially since their child, Zaya Wade, came out as trans. While Gabrielle Union is not her biological mother, she has repeatedly shown her support. Regarding the Paris Olympics boxing controversy, Gabrielle Union had a bold statement to make.

The Paris Olympics have remained a hub of controversies, and this one has become the latest. The Round of 16 women’s 66 kg boxing tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics was concluded in just 46 seconds. All of it came from Angela Carini quitting the match after a hard hit on the face by Imane Khelif. As per her statement, she had never been hit like this before and may have suffered a broken nose.

The audience was outraged at the IOC to see that a ‘trans woman’ was allowed to compete against a woman in the Olympic games. Her participation further went into question after she failed a gender eligibility test last year. However, the Algerian boxer claims to have been born with female reproductive parts at birth but has Y chromosomes.

Gabriel Union’s unwavering support for Zaya Wade

Zaya Wade came out as trans at the young age of 12 and became a trans-rights activist. She had set the bar for the coming generations to be woke and introspect themselves. Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have played a huge role in Zaya Wade’s transformation and coming out in the public eye. The couple has embodied power in their fierce support for their daughter.

Zaya Wade has previously talked about feeling empowered when her family was around. To prepare themselves, Union and Dwyane took crucial steps for Zaya. Primarily, they reached out for information and advice and started family therapy. Furthermore, they took steps to protect Zaya’s mental health, like limiting who can comment on her Instagram posts.

Recently, Dwyane Wade and Zaya Wade launched ‘Translatable,’ an online resource for trans youth of color and their families. The platform offered a safe space for youth to express themselves. The initiative was a huge move that might transform the situation of the world surrounding transgender rights.
