Stephen Curry reacts to guarding Klay Thompson
Tuesday night’s NBA Cup opener saw a number of games going down to the wire, with theatrics all around. However, the standout game of the night was the Golden State Warriors against the Dallas Mavericks.
In Klay Thompson’s return to the Bay Area, Stephen Curry had a surprising reaction when asked by HC Steve Kerr to guard his former teammate. Prior to the game, there was much discussion about who on the Warriors roster would guard Thompson.
Former teammates like Draymond Green suggested that he would take on the challenge by ‘running through Klay Thompson’. However, as game time rolled around, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr sought out Curry to assign the defensive assignment against his fellow sharpshooter.

“We went over our pregame scout and the matchups. It was almost surreal saying, ‘Steph, you got Klay.’ Steph smiled.”

According to a report by Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Curry apparently smiled when he was assigned the responsibility of guarding his ‘Splash Brother.’ Curry and Thompson faced up against each other on a number of possessions throughout the game.
Thompson was able to score 22 points on the night with six triples and a shimmy, although Curry recorded two steals while guarding him. However, the star of the night was Curry, who lit up the Chase Center with his play.
Curry ended the game with 37 points, nine assists and six rebounds, including the final 12 points of the game for the Warriors. He took over in the clutch to guide the Dubs to victory on a night where all three Mavericks stars in Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and Thompson recorded 20+ points.
Can Stephen Curry and Warriors continue their dominant start?
Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors have taken the NBA by storm so far this season. They hold a 9-2 record this season, tied for first in the Western Conference, trailing only the 12-0 Cleveland Cavaliers. Their win against the Mavericks sealed a 4 game stretch against the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Mavs.
The Dubs went 3-1 in this stretch of games, stamping the legitimacy to begin the season. The Warriors currently hold the 3rd best offensive rating in the league. They simultaneously harbor the 4th best defensive rating on the back of solid team defense and Draymond Green’s heroics.
They are led by Stephen Curry in scoring who has played a pivotal role in securing the late game victories for the Warriors. The team will now wait for Memphis, as the Grizzlies take on the Warriors in the next set of NBA Cup games, scheduled to kick off on Friday Night on ESPN.
