Sports commentator-turned-political pundit Stephen A. Smith made waves during a Tuesday appearance on The View. In the panel discussion, he confidently asserted that he would be a formidable contender in the 2028 Democratic presidential race.

Despite maintaining that he has no political aspirations, the ESPN analyst doubled down on his claim that he could defeat all potential Democratic candidates. He has touted himself as a potential presidential candidate for a long time now.

During his segment, Smith was asked about recent polling that placed him in a competitive position alongside established Democratic figures such as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

When confronted with this data, Smith didn’t shy away from the conversation. “I think I can beat them all,” he proclaimed.

Stephen A. Smith pointed out the desperation amongst Democratic voters being a key reason behind his confidence. Despite acknowledging his own lack of political qualifications, he argued that recent election cycles have demonstrated that traditional credentials are not necessarily a prerequisite for success.

His remarks stemmed from growing dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party following Donald Trump’s 2024 victory. Smith pointed out that while Trump has maintained a stronghold over the Republican Party since 2015, the Democrats have struggled to unify behind a strong alternative.

While many expected Smith to levy criticisms against the Republican Party, he instead directed his frustration toward the Democrats. “It’s not what it says about the Republican Party, It’s about what it says about the Democratic Party!” he told The View co-host Sunny Hostin.

Smith suggested that Trump’s continued influence over the GOP speaks more to the failures of the Democratic Party than to the strength of the Republicans. The octogenarian president has been impeached once, there are multiple felony counts against him including a conviction. He argued that Democrats have been unable to present a compelling and unified message to counter Trump’s dominance.

The outspoken sports personality claimed that Democrats were once the “party for the working class” but have since lost that reputation. He argued that over the past few decades, the party shifted its focus to other groups and issues, neglecting the people who originally supported them.

His views aligned with Bernie Sanders, who was one of the first to popularize the notion that the Democrats lost the election due to their policy change.

I wish we had enacted the housing, care, and child tax credit elements in Build Back Better so we would have had concrete cost-of-living benefits to run on.
