Stephen A. Smith goes OFF on Kawhi Leonard calling him the ‘worst superstar in the history of sports’
Kawhi Leonard has never played a full season or a playoff series for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Stephen A. Smith believes Kawhi Leonard is the worst sports superstar in history
Kawhi Leonard has endured a tough five seasons since joining the Los Angeles Clippers as a free agent. The idea was to win championships. Instead, they have never gone past the Western Conference Finals and were booted out of the 1st round in the last two tries.
With questions surrounding the team heading into the off-season, Stephen A. Smith went off on the superstar. While speaking on the subject of the Clippers on First Take, Stephen A. Smith gave this hot opinion.
He is a superstar when healthy. I can make a case this is the worst superstar in the history of sports. He is a nightmare. You're talking about the first 4 years of his time with the Clippers, he's averaged 40.3 games a season. Don't you notice how that's the never the issue right around the time for him to get his money, he's on the court. But then, the second the man get his money, you can't find him. He makes no effort to promote the game, to promote his team, to promote the NBA brand. It's the truth.Stephen A. Smith said
Smith basically thinks having Kawhi Leonard around does not help anybody. He feels that the Los Angeles Clippers should cut bait with the superstar.
The ESPN analyst gave the situation of their playoff runs over the past few years Leonard has been with the team as an example. Since the 2021 playoffs, Leonard’s unavailability has led to one season of no playoffs and two when they were booted out of the first round.
Add to that, he does not take part in any brand building exercise for the team. Crucial when he might be the lone superstar as the Clippers move into the Intuit Dome next season. But moving on from Leonard is a difficult task.
Kawhi Leonard facing an uncertain future in the NBA
Kawhi Leonard’s tryst with injuries is something that everyone in the NBA has taken note of. This could lead fellow superstar Paul George to move to another team in his quest to become an NBA champion before he retires. It leaves James Harden and Russell Westbrook with difficult scenarios of their own.
Harden is a free agent and has shown that he can lead the team. However, in the playoffs he was disappointing and led some to think that the Clippers might bail from offering him a new contract. Westbrook, though, has a team friendly veteran minimum deal. More importantly, he has a player option. Unless any other team comes forward and offers him a major contract, he might be staying put.
But, in the event all of three choose to leave, the Los Angeles Clippers will be stuck with Kawhi Leonard. No team in the league would in their right mind want to trade for him at that salary. As Stephen A. Smith mentioned, unavailability is his biggest concern.
