- Steve Kerr signed a new two-year contract to remain head coach of the Golden State Warriors.
- Fans expressed dissatisfaction with Kerr's extension, citing recent team performance and player management issues.
- The Warriors face challenges in competing for a championship as their core players age and young talent underperforms.
The 2025-26 campaign was not kind to Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors. They finished at 10th place in the Western Conference standings with a 37-45 record. It was the second time in three years that the Warriors failed to make it to the playoffs.
After booking a spot in the Play-In Tournament, the Warriors took out the Los Angeles Clippers in their first game. However, they were beaten convincingly by the Phoenix Suns, who went on to qualify for the playoffs as the eighth seeds.
With Kerr’s contract coming to an end, it was believed that the four-time champion head coach’s time with the Dubs was coming to an end after 12 years. However, after multiple meetings with the front office, Kerr put pen to paper and signed a new two-year contract to keep him with the franchise.
ESPN Insider Shams Charania broke the news on Saturday.
Steve Kerr has agreed on a new two-year contract to return as head coach of the Golden State Warriors. After three weeks of extensive conversations, Kerr and the Warriors agreed to continue their legendary partnership in what will be his 13th season and beyond as Warriors coach.

After their loss to the Suns, Steve Kerr embraced and hugged his two star players, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Even Green went on to say that he believed that Kerr’s time with the Warriors had come to an end.
Kerr’s new deal will keep him as the highest-paid head coach in the NBA. While there were reports that Kerr would not return for the 2026-27 campaign, he had also revealed that if he did leave, he would never coach another team and go face Curry.
With Curry at the backend of his career, the franchise player will be delighted to play for two more years under a head coach who has helped him achieve incredible success. The Warriors will need to be active in the offseason if they have any chance of competing for a championship in the Stephen Curry era.
Fans react to Steve Kerr’s two-year contract extension with the Warriors
There is no doubt that Steve Kerr will go down as one of the greatest coaches of all time and as a Warriors legend. However, Kerr has had his fair share of critics over the way he handled things with Jonathan Kuminga and the departures of Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson.
Hence, several fans took to social media to express their displeasure with the contract extension.
Warriors fans thought they were finally free and Shams just hit them with the ‘not so fast’ 😂

Many fans believe that getting Kerr back wasn’t the right move, as the Warriors have been far from contenders under him. However, the move does provide stability to an organization that will try its best to get the best of Stephen Curry’s last few years.
Can Steve Kerr take the Warriors to another championship?
As of today, the Warriors’ roster is far from being a contender. The young players haven’t developed to what the front office would have expected, and their core trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler are all in the backend of their careers.
However, last season, the Warriors trio under Steve Kerr made it to the Western Conference Semifinals. While they were beaten by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games, it was the injury to Curry that cost them in the series.

Even this year, the Warriors were fighting for a place in the top six. But an ACL tear to Butler in January saw their postseason hopes come to an end. The forward will not be back till next year, hence, the Warriors will need to make some big moves in the offseason.
The Dubs were interested in acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo at the trade deadline this year, but no move materialized. If the Warriors can trade for a player like the ‘Greek Freak’ and pair him with Curry, Kerr will fancy his chances of winning his fifth championship.
