Carson Hocevar has been one of the biggest talking points of the 2026 season owing to his exploits on and off the track. He has been part of some of the wildest and most aggressive moments of the season on the track, attracting criticism. In the meantime, he is representing NASCAR in cultural space with appearances in event such as the Met Gala.

While some dislike the youngster over the drama, NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell is one of his biggest fans. On his latest appearance on the Racin’ with the Boys podcast, the senior official pointed out that the Spire Motorsports driver is doing exactly what the sport expects from his on the track. He has proven his worth on the track with the risky moves that has yielded results.

I think with Hocevar, to me, he’s doing everything we would want from a driver getting out there now on track. He’s gonna make his moves, and drivers, they’ll handle what they need to handle out on the track.

Steve O’Donnell said about Hocevar.

Carson Hocevar does go beyond the acceptable limit sometimes on the track and Steve O’Donnell isn’t a big fan of it, that why he is okay with the consequences that would come the racers way owing to those aggressive moves. As one of the leaders of the sport what he invested more is the buzz the young drivers create on racetrack as well as among the casual fanbase.

So that’s on him to do that. But in terms of how he races, what Hocevar may or may not experience because of how he races on track, that’s one thing, but off the track, it’s fantastic. I mean, when we were at North Wilkesboro Speedway, he’s walking down pit road, and everyone’s chanting his name.

Further talking about the point, O’Donnell highlighted how not everyone in the NASCAR garage is built to be the poster boy type personal the sport wants, as some of them hates to be in those positions. But the sport needs rivalries and racers to play villain role like Denny Hamlin does, as at the end of the day it’s the big personalities that attracts fans.

And so, there’s a lot to that. And I think our drivers, you know, some of them get that, some of them don’t want to be that guy, and that’s okay. But we need rivalries. We need villains, right? Any sport and your personalities, you need a reason to care.

Steve O’Donnell asserted.

In the same conversation, O’Donnell talked about how NASCAR approach towards fining driver for fights on pit-road has changed over the years. He highlighted how he is okay with the drama as long as the crew doesn’t get involved. The sanctioning body will intervene if the team gets involved as most of the crew now being big ex-collage athletes, there higher probability of unwanted consequences.

But what happened was if you go on down pit road right now, a lot of guys look like you big dudes, right? And some of our drivers aren’t that big. Guys were getting in fights, and the crew guys were piling on. Yeah. It got a little dangerous. So, where we’re at is if the drivers want to handle their business. Great. When the crew guys start piling on that’s, that’s when we got a challenge.

Steve O’Donnell said.

The comments from the senior NASCAR officials about Hocevar and drivers fight are on point. He has been behind some of solid rule changes the sport has made recently, as they are listening to fans more than ever now and that will benefit the sport in the long-run by attracting new fans without offending the legacy supporters.
