The 2024 NASCAR Cup season had another controversial championship win, with yet another Bill France cup going to Team Penske Racing in the Next-Gen era. But the triumph of Joey Logano, his third title win, didn’t get appreciated enough over the fact that he had some of eth worst statics among the playoff racers.

There is a significant group in the racing community that demands changes to the playoffs, to avoid another championship win like that of Joey Logano’s. But NASCAR president Steve Phelps isn’t buying all these claims and he believes the 2024 season has seen the best racing the sport has ever had. He sees as a testament to the hard work put in by the whole NASCAR garage.

I think that inarguably this is the best racing we’ve ever had. Statistically and the eye test and just kind of looking at a high level, I think that’s a true statement. The great news about our guys is they never rest on what they’ve done, they’re always pushing to tweak to make it better.

Steve Phelps said via The Athletic.

The senior NASCAR official went on speak about the short track package, and highlighted how the changes made to the tiers by Goodyear changed the game for them. He also asserted that the next-gen era going to see more similar and better races.

And speaking of the short track package, a lot of that is the changes to the tire that Goodyear made, which has made a difference. Obviously, (races on) intermediates have been off the charts since this Next Gen car came on the scene in 2022, and I just think there’s going to be a continuing to iterate on it.

We’re looking at the damaged vehicle policy. Our guys looking back, I think they would tell you, ‘Hey, there’s nothing that we did that wasn’t consistent with what the rules (say) that we should be doing.’ There might have been some confusion relative to the competitors of what was happening… With that said, that’s something we’ll look at and potentially tweak heading into ’25.

The comment from Phelps suggests that NASCAR is looking into making some solid changes for the 2025 season after listening to the suggestions from teams and fans. It would be interesting to see how the potential changes are going to impact the sport next year.
