Jets fans are thrilled to see a real defensive coordinator in the shape of Steve Wilks joining Aaron Glenn's staff as the new DC.

Steve Wilks is back after a one-year hiatus from the NFL. The New York Jets have appointed Wilks as their new defensive coordinator in the Aaron Glenn regime.
Even though Glenn made his name as a defensive coordinator and promised the Jets’ defense would be aggressive in 2025, he dismissed the idea of calling defensive plays.
Glenn said he would delegate the responsibility to a defensive coordinator, and the Jets front office went to work soon after, searching for the right man for the job. NFL insider Jordan Schultz on Wednesday reported that the Jets interviewed Steve Wilks who is among the favorites for the job.
Later, Schultz, Tom Pellissero, and Conner Hughes confirmed the Jets hired Wilks as their new defensive coordinator.
A reminder: Aaron Glenn won’t be calling defensive plays and wants to solely focus on being a HC. Steve Wilks has the keys. https://t.co/j5AMSMux36

Jets fans jubilant hearing about Steve Wilks’ appointment
The 2024 season was a complete mess for the New York Jets. Robert Saleh was the team’s head coach and also called the defense occasionally due to his background as a DC, even though the Jets still had Jeff Ulbrich for four seasons as their coordinator. Jets fired Saleh and upgraded Ulbrich as the interim head coach but the move was comparable to fixing a water leak with a medical band-aid.
The outcome was a massive disaster for the Jets. They were 17th for rushing and scoring defense and 20th best in the red zone. It was a massive drop-off, culminating in a 5-12 finish during Aaron Rodgers’ second year as their quarterback. Ulbrich left to join the ranks in Atlanta, opening up a vacancy for the DC position.
Owner Woody Johnson revealed in Monday’s press brief that he has given Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey the power to search and appoint both coordinators. Steve Wilks will now manage the likes of Sauce Gardner, Jermaine Johnson II, DJ Reed, & Quincy Williams.
Steve Wilks is a great DC Hire for Aaron Glenn.

More importantly, having that role on the Jets Coaching Staff filled makes me feel more confident about Passing Game Coordintor/DBs Coach Deshea Townsend returning to the Lions next season (and not being poached to be a DC). https://t.co/ISe5PVOkfd
49ers defense ranks under Steve Wilks in 2023:
— The Jet Press (@TheJetPress) January 30, 2025
• Total Defense: 8th
• Rushing: 3rd
• Passing: 14th
• Scoring: 3rd
• INTs: 2nd
• Sacks: 3rd
• PFF Grade: T-1st (with the #Jets btw)
Excellent hire for Aaron Glenn’s staff. His HC experience is also super valuable.

DC Steve Wilks
– Good, smart hire for a first-year HC. No obvious connections to Wilks for Glenn, which isn't a bad thing. Players will love him.
– Has HC experience (Cardinals in 2018, interim for Panthers in 2022)
– Was…
Good to see Steve Wilks join the #Jets with everything he’s experienced in his NFL coaching career. https://t.co/XiG26Ch28n

Steve Wilks's most recent NFL job was as the defensive coordinator of the 49ers during the 2023 season. He was fired after last year’s Super Bowl after Kyle Shanahan said it was not the “right fit.”

But Wilks brings an extensive background to the Jets, dating back to 2006, when…

Perfect parlay for Glenn who’s new to role. Wilks has been a coach for 30 years and has seen a lot of ball across all levels

In 2023, the #49ers ranked third in points allowed and eighth in yards allowed under Wilks before limiting Patrick Mahomes to 19 points in regulation in Super Bowl LVIII. https://t.co/WzXRAr1d2c

Wilks spent the 2023 season coaching the San Francisco 49ers defense. He was the successor to now Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans at the Bay Area and made it even more formidable. The points per game (from 18.9 PPG to 17.5 PPG) and yards per game (from 305.3 to 303.9) dropped during Wilks’ tenure compared to Ryans’ era.
Love the Steve Wilks hire. Well respected long time coordinator who knows how to lead and inspire a defense. Was scapegoated by the 49ers even after improving their defense from the year before and holding Pat Mahomes to 1 touchdown in regulation during the Super Bowl#Jets pic.twitter.com/qLBSjhlTJX

The Niners played the Super Bowl in 2023 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite dominating the Chiefs, a late Mecole Hardman touchdown snatched the Lombardi out of the Niners’ nose. Wilks was fired soon after. After leaving California, he went back to Charlotte, North Carolina, and assumed the role of an advisor for the Charlotte 49ers.
Steve Wilks was 100% scapegoated after the 2023 Super Bowl.

They held the Chiefs to 3 points in the first half & 19 in regulation.
Bosa said they “could have been more prepared”. Here’s how the game started. They looked pretty prepared to me 🙂↕️

Wilks has been head coach twice in his NFL career. In 2018, the Arizona Cardinals, and then in 2022, when the Carolina Panthers appointed him as the interim boss.
