Sofia Kenin had an appendix removal surgery after the Phillip Island Trophy in Australia this year. Kenin returned to the tennis court ,after the surgery, at the Miami Open. She won her first match back, defeating Andrea Petkovic in three sets, 6-7 6-1 6-3. But in the second match she played, she lost to Ons Jabeur. Kenin played her first match on clay this year at the Charleston Open.

She faced compatriot Lauren Davis, and was defeated by Davis in three sets, 6-4 3-6 4-6. This will be her third tournament and fourth match after coming back, and Kenin will be hoping she goes back to her winning ways. Kenin had a bye in the first round. In the second round she will face Anett Kontaveit.

Estonian player Anett Kontaveit kicked off her clay court season with a straight set victory over young German player Julia Middendorf in Stuttgart. Middendorf gave up the first set easily, but fought hard in the second set. In the end Kontaveit won in two sets, 6-2 6-3.

Up against the hard hitting Kontaveit, Kenin can be in trouble if she doesn’t put pressure on Kontaveit early. A tough match to call. Kenin should just edge this contest.
