How a Substitution Blunder Might Cost Neymar Jr. World Cup Spot in the Brazilian National Team

Neymar's Brazilian Serie A campaign with Santos has been less than ideal, with him having only scored four goals and provided two assists so far.

In Short
  • Neymar Jr. was substituted in a Santos match due to an officiating error, causing him to miss crucial playing time.
  • His fitness for Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad is in question after a year-long recovery from an ACL tear.
  • The incident raises doubts about Neymar's selection, potentially marking the first World Cup he misses since 2014.

An officiating error led to Neymar Jr.‘s accidental substitution during Santos’ match against Coritiba in Sao Paulo, which left him furious. The incident not only caused an uproar, but could ultimately lead to the 34-year-old being excluded from Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

While he remains one of the most creative players that the country has ever produced, Neymar’s selection for Brazil’s 2026 WC squad has reached a fever pitch. Critics have argued that the forward is not been in his best shape to feature in a high-intensity tournament. The former FC Barcelona-man last played for the Selecao in October 2023, when he suffered an ACL tear which kept him out of action for a year.

Despite being named in Carlo Ancelotti’s provisional list for the 2026 World Cup, Neymar was in a race against time to prove his fitness before the final 26-member squad was announced. His final chance, amidst an injury-filled Brazilian Serie A season with his Santos FC, was a match against Coritiba. Coritiba had already taken a 3-0 first half lead, and it was down to Neymar to help his team stage a comeback.

He was, however, a part of a brazen officiating error, which resulted in chaos in the 65th minute. Neymar was on the sidelines receiving brief medical attention to his right leg.

While he had his back turned, the fourth official held up the substitution board to indicate that the team’s ‘No.10’, Neymar, would be coming off for Robinho Jr., who immediately ran onto the pitch. Realizing that he had been taken off, the forward exploded in anger along with members of Santos’ coaching staff on the touchline.

The former PSG superstar was so enraged that he even snatched the substitution slip from the official’s hand, and walked right up to the cameras to display that it had ‘No.31’ written on it, which meant defender Gonzalo Escobar was to be substituted off instead.

Because a player cannot return to the pitch once his replacement steps over the line, the decision could not be overturned. It cost him 25 minutes of playing time. He needed to demonstrate his match fitness to Brazilian head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Whether Ancelotti will select Neymar Jr. for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, or instead favor younger talent remains an open question. If Brazil decides not to include its all-time leading goal-scorer, it will mark the first World Cup since the 2014 edition in which he has not played.

Neymar: A decade of World Cup highlights, from Bronze Boot debut to injury setbacks

Neymar Jr. still remains one of the biggest names in Brazilian football, being the all-time top goal-scorer and assist provider for the national team. He first played in the 2014 World Cup on home soil, where he earned the Bronze Boot for being the third-highest goal-scorer.

He made his World Cup debut against Croatia, scoring twice in a 3-1 win. He scored two goals against Cameroon as well, to help Brazil reach the knockouts. However, Neymar’s tournament ended during the quarter-final match against Colombia when he sustained a brutal injury after being kneed by Juan Camilo Zuniga. The Selecao were later eliminated after a crushing 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-final.

Neymar returned to play at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In five matches, he scored two goals in what turned out to be a dismal run for the Brazilians, who were knocked out by Belgium in the QFs. Neymar’s 2022 WC campaign in Qatar was an injury-hit one. While he helped Brazil defeat South Korea in the R-16, Neymar’s goal could not save them from elimination in the QF against Croatia.

Should he make it to the 2026 World Cup squad, it will be his fourth appearance in the tournament. Neymar Jr. might, however, not be appointed the captain of the side, with head coach Ancelotti to pick between Marquinhos, Casemiro and Raphinha.
