CSK had a below-par IPL season last year as they finished outside the playoff spots for the first time ever in their history. It was a late surge fashioned by young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad that helped the side get three consecutive wins to avoid the wooden spoon with Rajasthan Royals (RR) finishing last instead.

Suresh Raina did not feature in the 2020 edition of the IPL due to personal reasons. It was speculated as to whether Raina would feature in the 2021 edition but the same was confirmed by both the player and the franchise. The No. 3 batsman would want to come good with the bat and spark a turnaround in their fortunes in IPL 2021.
