“They destroy people’s lives and livelihoods”: Kyle Chalmers’ father Brett slams Swimming Australia for ‘failing to look after their athletes’
Kyle Chalmers and Brett Chalmers
The media has pushed the limits on Kyle Chalmers‘ private life, as concerns of his mental health continue to grow at the Commonwealth Games. Recently, Chalmers was involved in a controversial ‘love triangle’ with Emma McKeon and Cody Simpson. Chalmers is Emma McKeon’s ex-boyfriend, while Cody Simpson is currently dating the swimming star.
The situation seemed to get way out of hand when Chalmers was painted as a villain by the media, almost insinuating that he wanted to take ‘crush’ Simpson in competition. Despite all the athletes refuting the claim many times, the media has prodded into the situation. Frustrated by their actions, Chalmers recently ‘shushed’ the media after taking a fantastic win in the 100m freestyle event.
Kyle Chalmers‘ father Brett Chalmer had quite a lot to say about the situation, saying that Swimming Australia had failed to protect its athletes against the hurtful and constant comments of the media. Brett said if this were to be a workplace situation, it would be taken as bullying and harassment. “If it was in a workplace and you kept getting asked the same question over and over again, it’s a form of bullying and harassment, and it’s not condoned and it’s not accepted,” he said.
“Its very hard to stomach”: Kyle Chalmers father speaks out against media pressure
“It’s been tough on myself, being 15,000-kilometres away. I can’t imagine what it’s been like for him to not have family and friends around him. But he’s got some good teammates and a really, really good coach so I’m sure that they rallied around him and gave him the love that he needed,” he said to nine.com.au.
“Sporting organisations and sporting clubs allow this to happen. They allowed the media to dictate the questions and keep going on about it. They’ve failed to look after their athletes.” He said that the journalists needed to find their limits and respect the athletes over and above everything. “Whereas these people (journalists) get away with it, they destroy people’s lives and livelihood. It’s pretty hard [to stomach].”
