The talent in the field of sports is getting younger and younger these days. Just take the example of David Popovici– a 17-year-old teen sensation who has already sealed himself a place in the history books by setting the 100m freestyle record. Popovici broke the record set by Cesar Cielo all the way back in 2009 at the 2009 World Championships in the very same building at the Foro Italico.
The 17-year-old sliced 0.05secs off the previous standard of 46.91s, finishing the race in a blistering speed of 46.86s in the 100m freestyle finals at the 2022 European Championships. Popovici became second youngest man in history, and the youngest European to break the World Record in the two-length event.
David Popovici has broken the 100m freestyle world record- and it is here to stay

David Popovici is the first Romanian – male or female – to win the 100 freestyle title and only the second medallist in the event after Norbert Trandafir claimed European bronze in 2012. Popovici set a European Record of 46.96m, becoming just the fourth man to dip under the 47 second mark.
“Yesterday I said that the European record was just one step in the right direction – and I was right. There was no rush and I had to be extremely patient about the world record. I’m still hot from the race, but these championships are not over yet, nor this very long season. It has hurt but it’s always worth it and I feel fine right now. It felt great and it’s very special to break this record which was set here in 2009 by Cesar Cielo,” said Popovici after the race to Swimming World Magazine. Watch his fantastic performance below.
