PV Sindhu in action at the Swiss Open

PV Sindhu, a reigning world champion who has been looking to pick up momentum after the World Championship title, now booked a quarterfinal berth at the Swiss Open 2021.

Sindhu eased past Iris Wang of the USA who is ranked 40 in the world. In just 35 minutes Sindhu wrapped up the game 21-13, 21-14 without having to break much sweat.

Post-match, Wang said to Badminton Europe “I think going into it I knew I was underdog, I was just trying to find a way to prolong the match. Since she is taller, she uses more energy. I think I was trying to make her run her which is my style anyway. That was what I was trying to do. But there were a couple of unforced errors. And she is one of the best in the world so it was quite tough”

PV Sindhu will now face Busanan Ongbumrungphan from Thailand who is The fifth seed. The Thai is tricky for the Indian, however, Sindhu holds a strong 11-1 head-to-head record against her. The last meeting between them was in the Toyota Thailand Open 2021 where Sindhu beat her in straight sets.

The promising Danish, Mia Blichfeldt seeded fourth struggled to get past Yvonne Li of Germany. However, she made it to the last 8 beating her 21-13,13-21,21-18.
