Former captain of the Indian U-19 team, Priyam Garg has been named as the captain of the Uttar Pradesh team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy which will take place later this month. It was earlier expected that Suresh Raina would be named the captain on account of his experience, but the management has decided to go with the young but capable Garg as the skipper for the tournament.

Suresh Raina is however, a part of the squad and will take to the cricket field after a long gap of over 8 months. Raina was supposed to take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) which took place in the UAE from September to November but the left-handed batsman withdrew due to personal reasons. Garg on the other hand, appeared for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and made some useful contributions with the bat and on the field.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar included in squad

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

In what is a surprise inclusion, Bhuvneshwar Kumar who sustained a thigh injury in the IPL while appearing for Sunrisers Hyderabad has been named in the squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. Reports earlier had stated that the pacer would return to cricketing action only in time for the next edition of the IPL which would take place in April. But it now seems that the bowler has recovered from his injury.

Other big names in the squad include Ankit Rajpoot who represented Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, Shivam Mavi and Rinku Singh who represented Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, Dhruv Jurel and Mohsin Khan. With an abundance of talented players at their disposal, UP will look to walk home with the coveted trophy.
