“Talent wise, Roger Federer is the greatest of all time” – Sania Mirza on the GOAT debate
Indian tennis star Sania Mirza stated that according to her, Roger Federer is the greatest player of all time because of how talented he is. She further said that the fact won’t change if Federer’s greatness is not backed up by statistics and if Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic cross his record tally of 20 Grand Slams which is the highest by a male player at present (along with Nadal).
Rafael Nadal has a chance of getting past Federer at the ongoing Australian Open while Novak Djokovic has a chance to close the gap by winning his 18th title. Federer won’t get a similar opportunity as he is not taking part in the tournament and has been out of competitive action for quite some time after a double arthroscopic knee surgery last year.
Sania Mirza speaks on the GOAT debate
Sania Mirza recently appeared on Sony Sports Network where she previewed the Australian Open. She was asked in the same if Rafael Nadal would be the considered the GOAT if he wins the Australian Open and beats Roger Federer’s tally. Her response was that statistics shouldn’t determine who the greatest is but each player’s talent should.
“He (Rafael Nadal) is definitely the greatest of all time on clay, there’s no doubt about that, but I don’t know if he’s the greatest of all time in terms of just pure talent. I think Roger Federer still takes that. I think anyone that knows even a little bit of tennis knows that. I don’t know if you agree with me or not, but when you watch Roger play tennis (it) comes a lot easier to you than it comes from most people in the world,” Mirza said.
“So I personally feel that Roger Federer is the greatest ever tennis player, regardless of the numbers, because I think talent wise he is still the best,” she gave the verdict.
On further being asked about whether the number of Grand Slam wins should be the factor for deciding who the GOAT is, she said, “I mean, I don’t think so. Then Serena Williams wouldn’t be the greatest women’s player today, and Roger Federer wouldn’t be, because Roger has the numbers to back him but does one Slam really change whether you’re the greatest or not.”
