The NFL has suspended veteran free agent safety Tashaun Gipson Sr., he was on the San Francisco 49ers for the last two seasons. The suspension is over a violation of the league’s PED substance abuse policy.
Last season, Tashaun Gipson started 16 games for the San Francisco 49ers and ended the year with 60 tackles for the team. He hit free agency earlier this off-season. While he remains free to sign with any other team in the NFL, he will be unable to contribute to their success in the first six games of the season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news regarding Gipson’s suspension, however, it remains unclear which prohibited substance he consumed that invited disciplinary action from the NFL. Over his 12-year career as a pro in the NFL, he has played for the Cleveland Browns, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Houston Texans, the Chicago Bears, and the 49ers.
Tashaun Gipson Sr. immensely contributed to San Francisco’s depth on defense in the last two seasons
He went undrafted in 2012, coming straight out of Wyoming, and he was signed by the Browns. He has since gone on to have a respectable NFL career for an undrafted free agent having tallied 684 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 33 interceptions, and 3 defensive touchdowns in a total of 173 games.
The San Francisco 49ers bought him on board in order to add extra depth to their defense. Gipson Sr. proved to be a vocal personality in the team’s locker room. As a vet, he motivated the younger defensive backs on the team and offered his guidance.
The 49ers’ decision to bring Tashaun Gipson Sr. paid off, after all, he recorded 14 total tackles in the playoffs. 5 of them came in the team’s Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The safety will turn 34 this year and he remains a free agent. The six-game suspension is bound to impact his prospects of signing with a new team.
