Taylor Fritz has been playing the best tennis of his career for the past twelve months, but has continued to fall short of Grand Slam glory. The American star has found it difficult to compete with the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on tour, but now believes he’s closing the gap on the two stars.

Fritz currently sits as World No.4 in the ATP rankings after back-to-back good runs on tour. He reached the quarter-finals of the US Open before going on to make it to the final of the Japan Open in Tokyo. The California native reached his maiden Grand Slam final at last year’s US Open, but lost the title to Sinner in straight sets.

The American star enjoyed an impressive second half of the season, picking form during the grass-court season, where he impressively won the Eastbourne International and Stuttgart Open. He earned his first victory over Alcaraz at the Laver Cup, where he beat the Spaniard in straight sets in San Francisco.

But they met a few weeks later in Tokyo, where Alcaraz earned his revenge in straight sets to win the ATP 500 title. Alcaraz and Sinner have dominated the tour this season, winning all the past eight Grand Slams and meeting in the final of the last three major tournaments. Both players have been dubbed to continue their dominance in the men’s circuit.

Fritz is currently featuring at the ongoing Six Kings Slam exhibition tournament, where he’s seeking to win the humongous prize money at stake. During an interview with Tennis365, Fritz revealed that he’s happy to have finally beaten Alcaraz at the Laver Cup but hopes to improve on his game to get closer to the level of the Spaniard and Sinner:

Whether it is beating somebody or get to a certain point in a tournament, when you do something once, it feels a lot easier to do again and again. It definitely helps (to get the win against Alcaraz). I played a great match and it gives me a clear outline, I guess, of what I need to do and what I can do to make it work. They are two incredible players (Sinner and Alcaraz). They push me to keep improving and become a better player to try and compete with them.

Fritz opened his account at the Six Kings Slam exhibition tournament against Alexander Zverev on Wednesday (October 15). The World No.4 defeated the World No.3 in straight sets in just 59 minutes to reach the semi-finals. Each player is guaranteed $1.5 million for appearance prize money at the exhibition tournament.

Taylor Fritz reflects on his poor start to the 2025 season

Taylor Fritz began the opening half of the 2025 season poorly. He crashed out of the third round of the Australian Open after losing to Gael Monfils in four sets. He didn’t reach a tournament final until the Stuttgart Open in June, getting to only one semi-final during that period. His worst run came at the French Open where he crashed out in the first round after losing to Daniel Altmaier.

Fritz won his final title of the season at the Stuttgart Open and claimed his second at the Eastbourne International. During the aforementioned interview, he revealed that the start of the year was rough for him:

If you look back to where I was half way through the season when we finished on the clay courts, to be where I am now I would have taken it. I was having a rough year. Not playing my best, sometimes injured. The second half of the year was great. I feel like the Grand Slam can come at any time.

Fritz has secured his place in the ATP Finals in Turin in November following his brilliant run on tour this season. He competed at the tournament last year, reaching the final after defeating Alexander Zverev. However, he lost the title to Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
