Taylor Fritz has admitted that he doesn’t want to get into trouble with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s fans after being asked who will have a better career when they decide to retire. The World No.4 was asked about the two rivals after breezing past Emilio Nava in the first round of the US Open.

Sinner and Alcaraz are currently in their best form of their careers and have met each other 14 times on tour. In the past year and a half, they have met seven times on tour, with Alcaraz winning six of them. They have also clashed in back-to-back major finals and are projected to meet in the US Open final.

Their first Grand Slam final came at the French Open, where Alcaraz came from two sets down to the 24-year-old in a five-set thriller that lasted four hours and 29 minutes. Sinner then earned his revenge when they met at the Wimbledon Championships, ending the Spaniard’s hopes of winning the title for the third consecutive time.

However, Alcaraz leads their head-to-head record 9-5 and also has one more Grand Slam than Sinner, five to the Italian star’s four. They are dubbed to dominate the men’s circuit the way the Big 3 (Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal) did. Fritz, who’s currently at a career-high ranking of World No.4 has recently not been able to overcome Alcaraz on tour, while beating Sinner only once in their last five meetings.

During his post-match press conference, the American star was asked who would ultimately have a better career between Alcaraz and Sinner. He struggled to give a reply because he didn’t want to get into any trouble with the fans of both players:

You’re trying to get me absolutely roasted by one of their fan bases. You don’t win. You can’t win with this answer. I really don’t know. It’s impossible, impossible to say… I think Jannik and his results have been more consistent, but I think the high end of Carlos is, like, probably the highest level that you’re going to see when Carlos is on. So don’t make me get destroyed by one of their fan [bases]… I’m good!

Alcaraz opened his account at the US Open with a straight-sets win over Reilly Opelka at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Sinner, on the other hand, kicked off his title defense against Czech Republic star Vit Kopriva on Tuesday (August 26). The Italian star entered the event after a runner-up finish at the Cincinnati Open, and breezed past Kopriva and straight sets.

Taylor Fritz hopes to continue with the grass-court “confidence” at the US Open

Taylor Fritz has yet to win a Grand Slam in his career. He reached the final of the US Open last year but lost in the final hurdle to Jannik Sinner, who defeated him in straight sets. The Stuttgart Open champion reached the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships, but was overcome by Carlos Alcaraz in four sets.

He opened his account at the US Open with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 win over Emilio Nava. Following the win, he revealed that he hopes to continue with his grass-court form that saw him reach the last four of Wimbledon:

It’s about how I feel like I’m, I guess, playing. You know, I would take more confidence from, I guess, my run on the grass courts this year than maybe the US Open last year, because I felt like I was playing a higher level, in my opinion, during the whole grass swing this year than maybe when I made the run here.

Fritz will now face Lloyd Harris in the second round. The American star is expected to face his first major test at the US Open in the quarter-finals as he’s projected to face 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic. He holds an underwhelming head-to-head record against the Serbian 0-10 on tour.
