Taylor Fritz has admitted that he believes he can beat Jannik Sinner in the 2024 US Open final. The American made it to the summit clash on home soil by beating Frances Tiafoe in five sets in the semifinals.
Fritz has been one of the most consistent American players this season. He has reached the second week of all four Grand Slams this year and won his first title of the season at the Delray Beach Open, beating Tommy Paul in the final. At the Eastbourne, he defended his title by defeating Max Purcell.
At the US Open, Fritz won his opening three matches in straight sets. It was in the fourth round that the American ace dropped a set against Casper Ruud. He then performed excellently against World No. 4 Alexander Zverev, winning 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the quarterfinals.
Fritz became the first American man in 15 years to reach the US Open final after beating Tiafoe 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Ahead of his title clash with Sinner on Sunday (September 8), Fritz stated that he was confident in his abilities as he finds himself one win away from his first Grand Slam title.
I’ve always enjoyed playing him. To be honest, I don’t think that I’m going to be put in a more stressful situation than I was today [against Tiafoe] than playing in a final. I think today was much more stressful than me playing the final. I just feel good. I have a feeling I’m going to come out and play really well and win. When I play good tennis, I think that level is good enough to win.Taylor Fritz said (via Tennis365)
Fritz and Sinner have met each other twice so far, with both picking one win each. They last met was at the 2023 Indian Wells Masters, where Sinner won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Jannik Sinner hopes wrist discomfort won’t be a serious concern ahead of his clash against Taylor Fritz
During Jannik Sinner’s victory over Jack Draper in the semifinals, the Italian heavily fell on his left wrist when trying to win a point. He looked in pain after the incident but went on to win 7-5, 7-6, 6-2 to reach his first US Open final.
After the match, the Australian Open champion hoped that the discomfort wouldn’t be a major concern when he faces Taylor Fritz in the final. The 23-year-old is seeking his sixth title this season and second Grand Slam of the year.
It was a very physical match, and I just tried to stay there mentally. Hopefully it’s nothing to be concerned about. I’m quite relaxed, because if it’s something bad, you feel it straight away.
Jannik Sinner said in his on-court interview
The Italian is yet to lose a final this year. The last time he lost in a title match was at the ATP Finals last year when Novak Djokovic defeated him in straight sets.
