American star Taylor Fritz achieved another milestone by reaching the title match of the ATP Finals on Saturday (November 16). Fritz reached the US Open final earlier this year, but he will now hope to go one step further in Turin.
Fritz’s semifinal against Alexander Zverev was extremely close. However, the American claims that his ability to stick to his game plan was fundamental in securing the win.
Fritz is likely to face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the title match in Turin. The World No. 5 already played the Italian earlier this week at the ATP Finals, which resulted in a straight-sets win for the top seed.
However, Fritz will have another chance to reverse the outcome of his heartbreaking US Open final loss to Sinner. In that match, he had the crowd on his side but not the title. This time, he will be in front of Sinner’s adoring fans and will hope to claim the championship.
Taylor Fritz makes US history at the ATP Finals
Taylor Fritz made history by becoming the first American to reach the Nitto ATP Finals title match since James Blake in 2006. On Saturday (November 16), he defeated World No. 2 Alexander Zverev in a thrilling match in Turin. Fritz won 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) after two hours and 20 minutes of intense play.
The fifth seed served exceptionally well and hit 32 winners. He also became the first player to break Zverev’s serve this week. Fritz has now won four matches in a row against Zverev and leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 7-5. Zverev made three key mistakes in the third-set tie-break, which helped Fritz secure the victory.
This is Fritz’s fifth final of the season. He will aim to win the biggest title of his career on Sunday evening. His opponent will be either Jannik Sinner or Casper Ruud. Fritz reached the semi-finals in Turin last year and has improved further this season.
Fritz is now up to No. 4 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. He will finish the year in the Top 5 for the first time. If Ruud does not win the title, Fritz will officially rise to a career-high World No. 4 on Monday. After his win, Fritz celebrated with the crowd before warmly greeting Zverev at the net.
