When the tennis community thought they probably had no better topics to discuss and debate, they did not expect to hear the news that World No. 2 Iga Swiatek had failed a doping test. They were not taken aback to an extreme extent because just a few months ago men’s World No.1 Jannik Sinner plunged into similar controversy. World No. 4 Taylor Fritz has his two cents on the subject.
Like Sinner, Swiatek also got contaminated accidentally and won’t be dealing with a harsher punishment. She accepted a one-month suspension after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) believed her explanation that the banned substance, trimetazidine (TMZ), entered her system because of a medicine melatonin that she was taking for sleep and jet lag issues.
Netizens once again debated and criticized ITIA while recalling how many innocent players, including Simona Halep, had to go through to prove that they did not violate doping rules. Fritz joined the bandwagon and instead of commenting anything on any player or the ITIA, he simply questioned the tennis fans for their opinions.
Fritz wants the tennis world not to blindly push the narrative that a player is a cheater simply because he or she is a rival of their favorite players.
