Nick Kyrgios who was the defending champion at the Washington Open 2021 crashed out in the 1st round to local lad Mackenzie McDonald going out 4-6, 4-6 as he continues his struggle to get back in form after having played just 4 tournaments in the year prior to coming in Washington.

The Australian played in the 2021 Murray River Open and then played at the 2021 Australian Open. After his 3rd round defeat in the Grand Slam, he was absent for the next few months skipping the entire Clay season and returned on Grass directly at the 2021 Wimbledon where he went out in the 3rd round again due to a mid-match injury.

After deciding to skip the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to the bio-bubble restrictions, Nick played his first Hardcourt tournament since February at the 2021 Atlanta Open where he was defeated in the Round of 16. He came to Washington as the favourite given his better record on Hardcourts and as the defending champion, but it was not meant to be for the World No. 77.

I am disappointed. I know I’m going to be dealing with a lot of “crap” now on social media. To be honest my head is loose there. The truth is, I didn’t play well,” said a disheartened and candid Kyrgios who will look to get back in his groove ahead of the 2021 US Open.

Are we seeing the last of Nick Kyrgios?

Nick recently talked about his lack of motivation to arrive at the tennis court and having already talked about how the Grand Slam titles don’t matter much to him, there has been a murmur about his possible early retirement which the player himself acknowledged being unsure about the future.

I love being around it. I try and soak in as much as I can. Just the practice, being around the courts, being at the highest level, I don’t take that for granted. I’m not going to lie. I mean, I don’t miss it that much anymore,” Kyrgios had said before starting his campaign at the Washington Open.
