On 30th January 2022, the 35-year-old Spanish tennis player, Rafael Nadal, broke the 20 grand slam record in the Australian Open 2022 by prevailing over the 25-year-old Russian player Daniil Medvedev in a challenging five-setter ( 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 ) that went on for five hours and 24 minutes, falling just short of breaking the record for the longest grand slam finals of all time.

Many high-level figures witnessed the record-breaking moment of Rafael Nadal winning his 21st grand slam, creating history and getting the title ‘ Greatest men’s singles player in Tennis. ‘ To the 35-year-old, this was an incredible feat as he competed in just one tournament over six months due to his foot injury, which occurred last year. He went down in the first and the second set and fought back to break Medvedev twice and push the match to the fifth set. Over the games, his game started getting stable, and his serves were coming head-on.

What a tremendous performance by Nadal, the third oldest major winner following Roger Federer ( 36 years five mons seven days ) and Ken Rosewall ( 37 years, two months, and one day old ).

The tennis legend and 11 grand slam holder Rod Laver, graced the men’s singles finals with his presence and said “A final of Herculean proportions, thank you for a brilliant contest, Rafa and Daniil.”

After the finals, Rod Laver went to congratulate Nadal for his record-breaking win, while the Spanish player was in the gym. A beautiful moment that all fans refer to as ‘ A legend meets a legend ‘ was when the Former Australian Open title holder met the two-time win while he was warming down.

“Two Australian Open crowns and 21 Majors, given everything you have endured, this historic victory is so special, Rafa. It has been a privilege to watch you doing what you love. Congratulations,” says the former tennis player.
