“Aim high, kids!” Judy Murray HAILS Rafael Nadal as an inspiration for the next generation
Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal staged a comeback of epic proportions against Daniil Medvedev in the final to win the Australian Open and an unprecedented 21st Grand Slam title. This win made him the player with most Grand Slam men’s singles titles ahead of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
After Nadal decided to cut his season short last year, to undergo surgery to treat his foot injury, many doubted that the Spaniard would step foot on the tennis court again, and even if he did, would he be the same player he once was. Nadal’s progress was further hampered when he tested positive for Covid at the back end of last season.
But the Spaniard started his 2022 season on a high note by winning ATP Melbourne Summer Set 1 and then defied all odds to capture his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. There were very few who backed Nadal to have a good showing at the Australian Open, let alone win it, considering that he hadn’t played in the second half of last year. He even looked down and out after losing the first two sets in the final, but overcame the deficit to win his second title at the Melbourne Major, 13 years after he won it for the first time.
Judy Murray applauds Rafael Nadal
Andy Murray’s mother, Judy Murray also joined in to heap praise on the newly crowned Australian Open champion, and retweeted a clip showing Nadal winning a title at the Les Petits As 22 years ago, and said that he should be taken as an inspiration for being ambitious and dreaming big.
“In the final of Les Petits As 22 years ago….Rafa hit only two shots into the net. Remember there is more space above the net than below it. Aim high, kids……“, she captioned it.
Les Petits As is a premier junior tennis tournament played in France every year, for players aged 12-14. A number of players who have won this tournament have gone on to become Grand Slam champions. Some of them include Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters and Jelena Ostapenko. Nadal won the tournament in 2000.
