“Alexander Zverev always find excuses in Grand Slams” Top journalist believes the German has gone a ‘step-back’
Alexander Zverev
World No. 3 Alexander Zverev continues his hunt for his first Grand Slam title but things do not turn his way whatsoever. The 24-year old reached his only Grand Slam final so far at the 2020 US Open where despite winning the first two sets, he could not claim the title as Dominic Thiem went on to stage a great comeback to win his first major.
Until the 2020 season, Zverev had not gone past the quarter-final stage in any Slam event. He changed this however in the very first Slam of the 2020 season reaching the semi-finals of the 2020 Australian Open where he lost to Thiem in 4-sets. With a 4th round run at the 2020 French Open and a runner-up finish in New York, many thought Zverev is now ready to challenge and win the majors for which he has certainly shown his potential.
He made the quarter-finals at the 2021 Australian Open losing to defending and eventual champion Novak Djokovic in 4-sets. At the 2021 French Open, he once again took a 2-0 lead but failed to win another set as Stefanos Tsitsipas won the next three sets to reach the finals in Paris. At the 2021 Wimbledon, he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the 4th round where he took the match into the 5th set after losing the first two sets but could not win the 5th set.
With another semi-final defeat to Djokovic in the 2021 US Open, Zverev failed to capture a Slam in yet another season. With Novak out of the 2022 Australian Open and given Zverev’s fantastic season on the ATP Tour in the 2021 season where he was the most successful player with 6 titles including the Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and winner at the ATP Finals, Zverev was a heavy contender for the Slam which would have also made him the World No. 1 but he lost in the 4th round to Denis Shapovalov in straight-sets.
“My step back would be Zverev because I don’t know there’s something in Grand Slams, he’s always trying to find excuses. This time it was all people telling me that he can become the World No. 1, but what’s next? At some point, just stop with excuses, just own it and go for it. For me that’s a step back, there’s something that is still not clicking,” said journalist Carole Bouchard during Tennis Major’s ‘Match Point’ show.
Alexander Zverev yet to reach the quarter-finals at all majors
While Zverev continues to win titles on the Tour successfully being one of the fiercest and more successful players, he somehow fails to replicate the performances in the Grand Slam events, something even he has acknowledged in front of the media.
While he has reached the semi-finals in Melbourne, Paris and New York, he is yet to go past the 4th round in Wimbledon despite reaching two Tour finals at the Halle Open in 2016 and 2017 as a young gun but was unable to win a title on the surface, the only one which evades him.
