“Alexander Zverev deserves it” Rafael Nadal approves the German getting kicked out from the Acapulco Open
Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev smashing his racquet
World No. 5 Rafael Nadal was one of the many who believed that World No. 3 Alexander Zverev getting removed from the ongoing 2022 Acapulco Open before his second round match was the right decision by the tournament officials. Zverev had violently smashed his racquet at the chair umpire’s stand with the racquet narrowly missing the umpire’s leg.
Zverev was playing in the doubles event with partner Marcelo Melo and the pair was up against lucky losers Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. With a controversial call by the umpire that saw Lloyd and Harri get match points, Zverev was unhappy with the decision and after the exchange on the net, he attacked the chair umpire’s stand in anger and frustration losing the match.
Zverev had earlier abused the umpire as well calling him ‘a f***ing idiot’ during the final set of the match. With the reaction of Zverev getting viral, within a few hours, the German was removed from the singles event as well where he was the defending champion and had entered the second round.
“In the end, I think he deserves the sanction because you can’t act this way. I think Sascha is aware of that and I hope this will serve as a lesson for him and for other young people who sometimes also lose their nerves on the track. It is logical that the organization that governs our sport makes itself respected and makes respect for Chair Umpires and sport in general.
“I am not going to enter into what is fair or not fair at the level of sanctions. But in the end, you do have to stop a little that type of attitude that becomes a little more fashionable,” said Nadal during his press conference after winning against Stefan Kozlov.
Rafael Nadal continues his unbeaten run in 2022
Nadal has now made his best start to a season winning 12 consecutive matches. Having won the 2022 Melbourne Summer Set 1 and following it up with the 2022 Australian Open title, Nadal’s win over Kozlov gave him his 12th win of the season in as many matches and the Spaniard will now take on Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals of the Acapulco Open in his bid for his 3rd title of the season and 4th of the tournament.
