World No. 3 and the defending champion at the 2022 Acapulco Open, Alexander Zverev was removed from the tournament after his violent actions towards the chair umpire after the German lost his doubles match. Zverev had partnered up with Marcelo Melo in the doubles and the pair met lucky losers Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara with the latter pair winning the match in 3-sets.

Zverev had earlier involved himself in a verbal spat with the chair umpire over a call that gave Zverev and Melo the task of defending the match points. “Look where the ball bounced. It’s 8-6 in the tiebreak, look where the ball bounced. For f–k sake, it’s your line. It’s f—–g your line. You f—–g idiot,” Zverev was heard abusing the umpire over the controversial call.

While the umpire stayed with his original decision, Zverev was quite upset over it and vented his frustration on the chair umpire’s stand after losing the match hitting his racquet at the base where the umpire’s feet were placed. He reached his bench but again went to strike the stand and argue with the umpire. While his actions resulted in him being ‘withdrawn’ from the tournament, Twitter praising the decision gave ATP Tour the reminder of Zverev’s violent behaviour and the impending investigation in his domestic violence case.

Zverev was accused by his former girlfriend Olga Sharypova in October 2020 stating that the player had abused her mentally and physically on multiple instances having punched and hit her. A few of the instances happened on the tournament site as well, namely the 2019 Laver Cup. With ATP announcing they are investigating the case, no conclusion has been made so far while Zverev continues his life on the Tour much to the dismay of the tennis fans.

Having smashed his racquet during his 4th round defeat at the 2022 Australian Open as well, the repeated violent reactions of the German might have been ignored by the ATP but not by the fans who brought up the case of Olga once again after Zverev was removed from the tournament. While the official statement reads ‘withdrawn’, there is little clarity whether he pulled his name back or did the tournament remove him.
