World No. 3 and the second seed at the ongoing 2022 Acapulco Open, Alexander Zverev was removed from the tournament prior to his second-round match in the singles discipline. The defending champion had earlier defeated Jenson Brooksby in the first round in what became a historical match as it finished at 4:54 AM local time becoming the latest finish to an ATP match.

Zverev was back on the court in a few hours’ time for his doubles match where he had partnered Marcelo Melo in their first-round doubles match against the pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara who entered the main-draw as the lucky losers. Zverev and Melo went out in 3-sets against the lucky losers pair and the German was animated after losing the match.

Having met on the net, Zverev went ahead and smashed his racquet at the stand of the chair umpire, hitting his racquet near to the foot of the chair umpire. “Look where the ball bounced. It’s 8-6 in the tiebreak, look where the ball bounced. For f–k sake, it’s your line. It’s f—–g your line. You f—–g idiot,” Zverev had earlier said to the umpire over a controversial call that gave Lloyd and Harri match points.

The violent behaviour of Zverev at the end was sure to get him in trouble and much to the satisfaction of the fans, the German was removed from the singles discipline as well for his actions.

Shortly after the match, the official Twitter handle of the tournament and the ATP Tour put out statements announcing that the player has been withdrawn from the main-draw of the singles event.

While it is still not clear why was the player not mentioned to be ‘defaulted’ and instead ‘withdrawn’ was used, Twitteratis were happy with the swift action of the tournament officials to remove and not entertain the violent and threatening act of the 2nd seeded player. Many people however questioned why ‘defaulted’ was not used and why is ATP still not investigating Zverev’s domestic violence case.
