World No. 134 Andy Murray has been granted a main-draw wildcard for the upcoming Australian Open 2022 where he will make the 14th appearance of his career having made his debut at the Slam in 2006. This will be the Brit’s first appearance at the Grand Slam since his 1st round exit at the 2019 Australian Open missing the 2020 edition due to injury and then missed the 2021 edition as he tested positive for Covid-19.
“Andy is renowned for his fighting spirit, passion and love of the game and I’m delighted to welcome him back to Melbourne in January,” said Craig Tiley, tournament director and CEO of Tennis Australia announcing the Brit’s return to the ‘Happy Slam’ that will begin from 17th January.
Given Murray’s current ranking, had he not been granted the wildcard, he would have to play the qualifying rounds before making his way into the main-draw as only the Top-108 ranked players are granted direct entry into the main-draw while others have to either apply for a wildcard or go through the qualifiers. However, given Murray’s track record at the Slam, he got the wildcard easily.
“I’m really excited to be back playing at the Australian Open and grateful to Craig and the team for the opportunity. I’ve had some great times in Australia playing in front of the amazing crowds and I can’t wait to step back out on court at Melbourne Park,” read Murray’s statement thanking the tournament for the wildcard.

Murray is a 5-time finalist at the major having finished as the runner-up in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016 with Roger Federer defeating him in the 2010 finals while Novak Djokovic got the better of Murray in the remaining 4 finals. He has one quarter-final and semi-final exit as well while being defeated in the 4th round thrice in his career.
Murray also has three 1st round exits from the Grand Slam, in 2006 when he made his debut, in 2008 and then again in 2019, his last appearance in the Rod Laver Arena. With some good tennis towards the end of the 2021 season, a good run can be expected from the Brit when he return to Grand Slam action in January.
