3-time grand slam champion Andy Murray is all set to compete at the US Open 2021 directly in the main draw. Earlier, Murray was scheduled to play in the qualifiers but following multiple withdrawals from the main draw, Murray gets a direct entry into the draw based on his rankings.

Murray is currently ranked 105th in the world and was just shy of receiving a direct entry when the list was announced. But the withdrawals played very well into Murray’s hands, as he will have another direct chance to give a rare shot at the unpredictable US Open title.

Andy Murray has a special connection with Flushing Meadows. He reached his maiden grand slam final at the 2008 US Open and later won his first grand slam in 2012 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. However, he hasn’t done well particularly in the last 5 years. His last best performance came in 2016, where he reached the last 8. He played in 2020 too, where he bowed out in the second round.

The last 4 years of Murray’s career have been heavily struck with career threatening injuries. He suffered a dangerous hip injury and still hasn’t fully recovered from it. Adding fuel to fire is his bad luck. He sometimes gets injured for petty reasons and was even sidelined from the tour after he tested positive for COVID-19.

But Murray showed glimpses of his old form at 2021 Wimbledon, where he beat some quality opponents on centre court, giving the local fans a lot to cheer about. He beat Nikoloz Basilashvili and Oscar Otte in the initial rounds before losing to Denis Shapovalov in the Round of 32.
