Former World No.1 Andy Murray’s campaign at the 2021 Indian Wells came to an end in the third round at the hands of World No.4 Alexander Zverev. Coming into the match, the German was trailing the Scot 2-0 in their head-to-head.
However, despite not playing his best tennis for the evening, Zverev turned the tables around and beat Murray 6-4, 7-6 (4) for the first time in his career. In the process, the Tokyo gold medalist also joined an elite club by becoming one of the few players to beat the Big-Four of tennis.
Post his victory, Zverev in his on-court interview said, “He’s the only one of the Big Four that I hadn’t beaten yet, so I’m happy that I’ve done it today. Obviously it was a fantastic match. I thought Andy played extremely well, maybe as well as he’s played since the surgery. I hope he continues playing the same way, because tennis did miss him for a long time and I think it’s good to have him back.”
Although both players engaged in some long, gruelling exchanges, the highlight of the match arguably came when the three-time Grand Slam winner Murray had to rush for a toilet break, in the middle of the second set.
Interestingly, Zverev’s repair work on his shoe presented the Brit with an opportunity to quickly sneak for a comfort break, much to the amusement of the crowd, chair umpire and the commentators.
Here are some hilarious reactions by the fans from the world of Twitter
The 24-year-old will now take on Frenchman Gael Monfils in the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open. Zverev has already won 19 of his last 20 matches on the hard courts and will be aiming for his third ATP Masters 1000 title of 2021.
