‘Another one bites the dust’ Anett Kontaveit latest seed to crash out as Clara Tauson wins their 2nd round clash at the Australian Open 2022

Anett Kontaveit

World No. 7 and the 6th seed at the ongoing Australian Open 2022, Anett Kontaveit was another upset victim on the Day-4 of the Slam as the Estonian lost in straight-sets to 19-year old Clara Tauson who is ranked 39th in the world. Tauson won the match 6-2, 6-4 in 1 hour and 19 minutes on the Margaret Court Arena to upset the seed and reaches the 3rd round of a Slam for the first time in her short career so far.

Given Kontaveit’s form in the final few months of the 2021 season that also saw her finish as the runner-up of the 2021 WTA Finals, many expected a deep run at the Slam from her but Clara has put all stops on it as she picks up her first-ever Top-10 win by defeating Kontaveit who was the favourite coming into this tie.

Except for the number of net points won, Kontaveit lacked behind Tauson in every aspect. The teenager hit 5 aces while conceding only 1 and made no double faults while Kontaveit made one double fault. Clara had 20 winners, 13 unforced errors as she won a total of 68 points while Kontaveit had 15 winners, 27 unforced errors and 46 points at the end of the match.

“I don’t really know what to say, I felt so good out here and I heard a lot of people cheering for me and that just gave me so much confidence, I played a really good match. I didn’t go into this match with the winning thought, I was just so happy to be here and playing Anett who’s been playing so good last couple of months. I was just trying to see where my level was at,” said an emotional Tauson during her on-court interview.

Tauson will now be up against American Danielle Collins in the 3rd round clash with Collins earlier taking out Ana Konjuh in straight-sets to advance in the 3rd round. Meanwhile, Kontaveit becomes the 4th seed to crash out from the 2nd round joining 22nd seeded Belinda Bencic, 32nd seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo and 3rd seeded Garbine Muguruza to go out early from the Slam.
