Ash Barty

World No. 1 Ash Barty continues to reign supreme on the WTA Tour having cemented her place at the top of the WTA Rankings for nearly 2 years now. Barty became the World No. 1 for the first time on 24th June 2019 and held her position till August when she dropped to the 2nd spot. She became the top-ranked player again on 9th September and has not been moved from there ever since.

The 3-time Grand Slam champion has now finished as the World No. 1 at the end of the year for 3 consecutive years and continues to hold a massive lead on her colleagues. After the WTA rankings were updated on 28th February, Barty is currently on the top spot with 7980 points to her name with Barbora Krejcikova who became the World No. 2 for the first time, is having 5073 points, an enormous gap of 2907 points.

Barty enters her 117th week as the top-ranked player matching Justine Henin‘s record and the Australian is now listed 7th in the all-time list of total weeks as the World No. 1. From the 117 weeks at the top, she had a break of only 7 weeks as she has now also entered her 110th week as the World No. 1 and is now just 3 weeks away from overtaking Chris Evert who spent 113 consecutive weeks at the top of the rankings. Should Barty overtake the American, the 25-year old will rise to the 4th spot in the list of consecutive weeks at the top.

Steffi Graf and Serena Williams jointly hold the record of having spent a total of 186 consecutive weeks at the top while Graf with 377 weeks is also the woman to spend the most weeks at the top of the WTA rankings. With Barty looking set for an illustrious long career having won majors across all surfaces already, it looks to be a matter of time before she is able to break these records.

Barty is 11-0 for the season having won the WTA-500 event in Adelaide and followed it up with her maiden Australian Open title. In the 11 matches, she dropped only 1 set, in her season opener in Adelaide and is now currently on a 10-match straight-set victory run on the Tour. Barty has not played on the Tour since then but the wait seems to come to an end as the Australian has confirmed that she will be making the trip to the Californian desert for the upcoming 2022 Indian Wells Open.

Barty made her debut in 2018 but lost in her tournament debut. She reached the 4th round in 2019 but has not played since then as the 2020 edition was cancelled and Barty ended her season after the 2021 US Open with the 2021 Indian Wells Open taking place after the Slam in New York due to the Pandemic.
