Fernando Verdasco vs Alex Molcan: Match Preview
Thirty Seven year old Spaniard Fernando Verdasco is currently in the worst slump of his career. Verdasco, once ranked as high as No.7 in the world, is currently languishing at No. 107, his worst ever ranking. This is the first time in 17 years on tour that Verdasco has fallen outside the top 100. Last year Verdasco struggled with injuries and Covid, which forced him out of the French open, and brought a premature end to his 2020 season. He started his 2020 season with the Miami Open, where he lost his first round match.
Since then Verdasco has participated in three more tournaments and has been ousted in the first round in each of them. But the sun seems to be finally shining on the Spaniard as he has won two rounds to make it to the Quarter-final stage here. In the first round he beat Lucas Pouille and in the second got the better of fourth seed Adrian Mannarino. His next opponent is Alex Molcan.
The twenty three year old Molcan is mostly a Challenger series player. The last time the Slovakian played in the main draw of an ATP event was in the Open 13 where he won the Qualifiers to make it to the first round of the event. At Belgrade he has come through the qualifiers into the main draw. In the first round he beat Hamad Medjedovic, and in the second got the better of Peđa Krstin6-0 6-0.
Fernando Verdasco vs Alex Molcan: Head-to-Head
These two players have not met on tour before, so the head to head stands at 0-0.
Fernando Verdasco vs Alex Molcan: Prediction
Verdasco has seven ATP Titles in his career, and five of them has been won on clay. He seems to be finally getting some form back. In all honesty if Verdasco can play anywhere close to his actual level, he should walk this contest home. Molcan is a youngster who is on a high after securing a double bagel. Expect Verdasco to win it though.
Match Prediction: Fernando Verdasco will beat Alex Molcan in straight sets.
