Diego Schwartzman vs Richard Gasquet: Preview
The third seed is coming into this tournament with a mixed-bag of results on the clay this season. Although the Argentine won the tournament in Buenos Aires early in the year, his European clay-swing has not been impressive. Schwartzman has suffered three second round exits in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome. Owing to his higher ranking, he received a bye in the opening round at Lyon this week. With only seven wins out of 12 outings on the dirt, Schwartzman has to up his game in the lead up to the French Open.
On the other hand, the 34-year-old continues to have another poor season on the tour. The French veteran is perhaps at the end of his career, but explained recently about enjoying time on playing tennis. Gasquet’s regression has become visible after his early losses in Monte Carlo, Estoril and Rome to lower-ranked players. Even in the first round in Lyon, he struggled to beat a French qualifier Gregoire Barrere in three sets. Not much is expected from this former top-10 player this week.
Diego Schwartzman vs Richard Gasquet: Head to Head
These two have met four times on the tour, with Gasquet leading 3-1. However, in their last meeting it was Schwartzman who beat the Frenchman in straight sets in Paris indoors last year.
Diego Schwartzman vs Richard Gasquet: Prediction
Although Gasquet leads their head-to-head tally and has also beaten Schwartzman on clay in 2018, the Argentine is the favourite to win this match. While the diminutive third seed is not enjoying his best season on clay, the veteran Frenchman is perhaps in the worst shape possible. Don’t expect a high quality match. It could even last the full three sets.
Match Prediction: Diego Schwartzman should win in two sets.
