This year’s results for Alexander Zverev have been lukewarm. This season, he has only played one final, at the Open Sud de France. After an outburst during the Mexican Open in February, the German was disqualified from the competition. Following that, he had disappointing results at the Indian Wells and Miami Open, when he only made it to the second round and quarter-finals, respectively. The German, however, has made a solid start to his Monte Carlo campaign. He gained a bye in the first round as one of the top seeded players before defeating Federico Delbonis in the second round. Then, in the third round, he breezed past Pablo Carreno Busta to secure himself a place in the collision of the last eight.

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner, an Italian prodigy, has had a good year thus far. In the Australian Open, Miami, and Dubai, he reached the quarterfinals. In Dubai, he was defeated in straight sets by Hubert Hurkacz, while in Miami, he had to quit hurt after only five games against Francisco Cerundolo owing to blisters on his foot. Due to illness, the Italian had to grant a walkover to Nick Kyrgios earlier in the week at Indian Wells as well. In the Monte Carlo Masters, though, he made a stunning comeback, defeating Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. In the third round, an in form Andrey Rublev put a tough fight against him. However, the Italian came back from a set down to conquer the match and book a clash with Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals.

There will be no such favourites in this match as both players are capable of giving each other a run for their money. However, if we consider the head to head records, Alexander Zverev appears to have a little advantage. However, Sinner has beaten Zverev on clay before, and he might as well do it again. Both players are comfortable on clay. The World No. 3 dominates from the baseline and will look to dictate play from the back of the court whilst Sinner is an aggressive player who is strong off of both wings, his serve remains a liability and more so on clay. Furthermore, regardless of the winner, fans should expect a fascinating match that could stretch up to three sets.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
