Tommy Paul vs Jan-Lennard Struff: Match Preview

Tommy Paul
Tommy Paul

Twenty-four year old American Tommy Paul has had a tough run on clay. He has run into players like Stefanos Tsitsipas (Lyon Open), Andrey Rublev( Madrid Open) and Roberto Bautista Agut( at Monte Carlo and the Italian Open) and has been ousted early on. This former boys’ French Open Champion is actually a good player on clay.

Paul who is seeded 6th in this event, took out Italian Stefano Travaglia in the first round. In the second he got the better of Jiří Veselý in a three set encounter, winning 6-7 7-6 6-3. His opponent in the Quarter-finals is the German player Jan-Lennard Struff.

Struff had reached the Final of the Munich Open where he lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets 4-6 6-7. Since then he has not had great results on clay. At Madrid he was ousted in the first round by Alexei Popyrin. At the Italian Open he lost to Andrey Rublev in the second round. In this tournament he overcame Italian Flavio Cobolli in a tough three setter, 6-4 4-6 7-6.

Tommy Paul vs Jan-Lennard Struff: Prediction

Tommy Paul
Tommy Paul

Tommy Paul is a powerful player with a gun serve and great footwork. But consistency has been his bane. In this tournament he is finally beginning to string together a few results, and that’s not good news for his opponents.

Struff really struggled in his last game. His serving was awful, he served six double faults and his first serve percentage was barely around the 50% mark. A repeat of that and he is surely going home.

Match Prediction: Tommy Paul will beat Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets.
