Grigor Dimitrov vs Ilya Ivashka: Preview

Grigor Dimitrov
Grigor Dimitrov

After a decent beginning during the start of the season, where Dimitrov reached the quarters of the Australian Open and Acapulco, the Bulgarian had a slip up in the clay courts of Europe. While he did manage to make the last eight in Geneva, it’s not been a very productive season for the super talented, Dimitrov till now. That said, he loves playing on the hard courts and the 30-year-old comes into this match with 12 matches under his belt, including eight wins. Dimitrov has also beating big names in Dominic Thiem, Pablo Carreno Busta and Marin Cilic in 2021 on the hard courts, which will give him enough confidence to make an impact going ahead.

On the other hand, Ivashka comes into this contest after beating Egor Gerisimov in straight sets in the opening round. The Belarusian was also seen trying for a medal at the Tokyo games, where he was dumped in the third round by Kei Nishikori. While he enjoyed decent success on the grass and clay courts of Europe, his record on the hard courts for 2021 hasn’t been very impressive. Perhaps, that is an area where he would be keen to work on going ahead.

As far as pure skill and experience goes, Dimitrov is miles ahead of his opponent. That said, Ivashka has also been coming up the ranks, with appealing results under his belt. It is certain that Belarusian will test the Bulgarian in this match. But perhaps, the variety and big point awareness of Dimitrov might see him through.

Match Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov should win in three sets.
