Coming into Washington on the back of a disappointing last-16 finish at Atlanta, Sinner opened his campaign with a straight-set clinical victory over rising Finnish star Emil Ruusuvuori. He followed up the opening-round win with a hard-fought victory over his current doubles partner Sebastian Korda and even though he eventually came through in straight sets, both went to tiebreaks that were closely contested.
Johnson got his Washington campaign off to a winning start after prevailing in straight sets against Ramkumar Ramanathan of India. The American followed up his first round victory with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2 upset of current World No. 18 Australian Alex de Minaur.
Johnson then smashed Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis in straight sets to set up a last-eight match with Sinner. He also made it to the Los Cabos quarter-finals last month.

The pair’s one and the only meeting came back in 2019 in the Round of 64 of the Italian Open, where home boy Sinner came out on top, edging Johnson in 3 sets, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.
