Ashleigh Barty vs Lesia Tsurenko: Preview

Ashleigh Barty

Local girl Ashleigh Barty is all set to claim her first Australian Open title as she is one of the heavy favourites coming into the Slam. The Australian has already won the Tour title in Adelaide to start her season with a title. Barty has a 17-8 record at the tournament with her semi-final run in 2020 being her best result so far. She lost in the quarter-finals in the 2021 Australian Open.

Lesia Tsurenko makes the long road to reach the main-draw as she comes on the back of 3 consecutive straight-set defeats with two bagels dropped in the 6-sets she played. The Ukrainian has reached the 3rd round at the Slam only once, in 2013 and has a 15-10 record at the tournament. Coincidentally, she lost in the first round in 2020 to Barty which was her last appearance at the tournament.

This will be the 4th meeting between the duo and their third in main-draw matches. They last met in the first round of the 2020 Australian Open where Barty won in 3-sets and now leads the head-to-head tie 2-1.

Ashleigh Barty vs Lesia Tsurenko: Prediction

Barty will come into the tie with a career hardcourt record of 160-51 and was 21-4 on the surface last season while finishing the 2021 season with a record of 42-8 across all surfaces. Tsurenko will take the court with a career hardcourt record of 171-116 and was 10-10 on the surface last season and had a 30-17 record for the season across all surfaces.

Looking at these numbers and considering their form in the 2021 season as well as the few matches they have played this year, Barty does look the favourite for the clash and move into the second round comfortably.

Prediction: Ashleigh Barty to win in straight-sets.
