Diego Schwartzman is an Argentine tennis player who is famous for his top-notch return game. The Argentine has been in good form for the last couple of years in general, reaching a career-high ranking of 8th in 2020. In the 2021 season, the 29-year-old won the 4th ATP title of his career at the Argentina Open without dropping a single set, defeating Francisco Cerúndolo in the final. The Argentine also reached the quarter-finals of the French Open but was defeated by tournament favourite Rafael Nadal in a hard-fought contest.

Serbian Filip Krajinovic has been in decent form after bowing out in the first round at Wimbledon. He reached the final of the German Open where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinal and Laslo Djere in the semifinal. He then made back-to-back quarterfinal appearances at the Croatia Open and Austrian Open. After the US Open, he reached the semifinal of the Sofia Open where he lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner. He was last seen at the ATP Cup, where he and his Serbian team exited at the group stage.
