Maria Sakkari played only two matches before the Australian Open. She won against Tamara Zidanesk in the first round of the WTA Adelaide International 2 before losing to Shelby Rogers in three sets in the next round.

At the Australian Open, she has played much better and has notched up straight-set wins in all her matches to advance to the fourth round. In the first round, she defeated Tatjana Maria 6-4, 7(7)-6(2). In her next two rounds, the Greek produced a bit more refined performance as she breezed past Qinwen Zheng 6-1, 6-4 in the second round and Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-1 in the third round.

Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula lost in the opening round of both the Melbourne Summer Set 2 and the Sydney International.

She avoided a third consecutive loss and came back from a set down to defeat Anhelina Kalinina 4-6, 7(7)-6(1), 7-5 in the first round match at the Australian Open which lasted nearly three hours. She then notched up convincing wins against her compatriot Bernarda Pera (6-4, 6-4) and (Nuria Parrizas-Diaz) 7-6, 6-2 to book her place in the round of 16 for the second consecutive year.
